Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

Collagen induction therapy (CIT), also called microneedling and percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a minimally invasive skin-rejuvenation procedure that involves the use of a device that contains fine needles housed in a disposable cartridge. The needles are used to puncture the skin to create a controlled skin injury. Each puncture creates a channel that triggers the body to fill these microscopic wounds by producing new collagen and elastin. Through the process of the production of the new collagen there is improvement in skin texture and firmness, as well as reduction in scars, pore size, and stretch marks.

It can be performed on areas of skin that may not be suitable for peeling or laser resurfacing, such as around the eyes and mouth, hands, and chest. In addition it is safe for all skin colors. The procedure is well tolerated by patients with minimal downtime, and can be easily personalized by going deeper on some areas where skin damage requires a more aggressive approach. Topical anesthesia cream is used on the area used to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure. Multiple treatments will be necessary and it is recommended to start with three in a series performed one month apart. The number of needling sessions depends on the individual skin condition. Two or more series may be recommended for mild to moderate acne scarring, and stretch marks. Maintenance can also be done and is recommended annually for fine lines, wrinkles, and texture concerns.
